Every month has a slew of different things that are listed as National 'something' awareness. May alone has Stroke Awareness, Asmtha & Allergy Awareness, Motorcycle Safety Awareness, HIV Vaccine Awareness, and even my own condition, Fibromyalgia (FMS) Awareness, and I'm sure there are many others. But the one that is closest to my heart is this,...
May is World Neurofibromatosis Awareness Month
What is NF, you might ask? Neurofibromatosis encompasses a set of distinct genetic disorders that cause tumors to grow along various types of nerves and, in addition, can affect the development of non-nervous tissues such as bones and skin. Neurofibromatosis causes tumors to grow anywhere on or in the body.
NF is near & dear to my heart because my youngest daughter, Ashley, has it. I recognized the signs when she was born, but she was not officially diagnosed with the disorder until 2002 when she was 2 1/2 years old. For the past three years she has been monitored by MRI every 2-3 months in order to carefully gauge her tumor growth. Ashley has what are known in the medical world as bilateral optic nerve gliomas,... in lamen terms, she has tumors on her eyes. These are technically brain tumors that are growing along the optic nerves and into the chiasm of her brain. While these tumors are not cancerous, they are considered semi-malignant in terms of NF because they do threaten the health of her eyes. Essentially, they could cause her to go blind in one or both eyes. There is no cure for NF, and there is no way to predict the path she'll follow. God willing, she could continue through life without these things ever causing her any more grief than merely monitoring them.
While I support all types of awareness because it is key to any situation, I would just like to take a minute to focus on this particular cause. If this is new to you, or if you haven't visited in awhile, please feel free to visit our website 4ashley.com as well as the Children's Tumor Foundation, formerly known as the National Neurofibromatosis Foundation -NNFF, ctf.org.

I Killed the Easter Bunny...
*ugh* Where do I start...............??
So, the other day, my youngest, Ashley, starts going on about the Tooth Fairy, Santa & the Easter Bunny again. All of my kids have had probably more than their fair share of 'goodies' from each of these mystical beings, as many know, I went a little overboard starting various traditions in our house for the children, and it snowballed.
Anyway, keeping with the subject at hand, Ashley is the only one left that still believes in these 'characters', and she has begun to take it to a level I'm not comfortable with. The idea that if Santa, the Easter Bunny, and the Tooth Fairy are real, well then all faeries must be real, and if ALL faeries are real, then mermaids must be real, too, and if mermaids are real then,... well, you get the idea.
So, I decided to feel her out on whether she might be ready to have the talk,... no not that talk, the 'your world as you know it is a fantasy' talk. So we chatted a bit, and I decided to make my first attempt with the Easter Bunny, as he seemed he might be a little easier to convince as a fallacy. "You really think there's a 6 foot tall bunny that hops around from place to place and nobody ever catches him?", I ask... "Sure, maybe he can change shape like Santa when he shlurps down skinny chimneys like jell-o", says she (this she got from the SantClaus movie). Oh, boy. So, I test the waters with, "Well, how would you feel if the Easter Bunny was really someone?,... What would you think about that? How would you feel?"....... *SILENCE* Then, she asks me if she can go get a piece of paper. She does, and then a few minutes later comes back with this...........
Three pictures. The first being the Tooth Fairy and Ashley and they're both smiling. There's a box, and she says "Tooth Fairy is real,.. "check!". Next picture. This one is of Santa and Ashley, and again, they are both smiling. Another box, and another response of, "Santa is real,... "check!".
And now for the final picture. The final picture portrays the Easter Bunny and Ashley, only there are no smiles, they're both sobbing,... not just crying mind you, but SOBBING. The Easter Bunny is encircled repeatedly and has a big "X" over top of him, the checkbox is scribbled out, and there, next to all of this, is a picture of me,... it's a picture depicting 'Mom' with scissors and some other items I couldn't decipher so Ashley in a very snub voice says, "You have scissors,.. you cut off his whiskers to make a guitar, and you cut off his tail to make a hat. YOU KILLED THE EASTER BUNNY. That's how I feel".
??????????????????!!!!!!! What the heck do you say to that??!
My jaw was on the floor. Guess you can figure out that I left everything else alone,... I didn't even tell her he doesn't exist, I just asked her how she would feel if he was really someone else,......... I can only imagine if I attempted to talk to her about Santa, the Tooth Fairy, mermaids, or the like right now,........ she'd probably decide I'm a freakin' serial killer! LOL
I didn't remotely have this trouble with my older two, but they weren't as 'set' on these things as she is, and so I held off talking to them until they were a couple of years older and really began questioning things on their own. So, I guess I'm going to keep waiting with her,......... no way I'm going to end up on "Ashley's Most Wanted" as the "Fantasy Slasher". Yikes!
Any thoughts??

My Birthday
So first, let me say 'Thank You' to everyone who either called or emailed me with birthday wishes,.... ya'll are AWESOME!!
I did the majority of my celebrating yesterday, which was nice because then today I was able to just sleep in & lay around doing absolutely nothing with is another huge gift in itself, LOL.
Yesterday afternoon, I met up with my sister down in Albany, and she took me out to lunch at our (mine & her's) favorite restaurant, Novak's. It's a hungarian restaurant, and let me tell you, the food is always AMAZING. Honestly, I can only tell you what one dish in particular is like because it's our favorite, and we always order the same thing,... always, ALWAYS. The marinated cucumbers are really yummy, and the Turos Teszta is to die for!! Mmmmm..... We shared a bottle of Chiannti (scrumptious!) with lunch, and then followed up our meal with some Tiramisu (which simply put, is *heaven in your mouth*,.. although an italian dessert). Afterwards, we hit Starbucks for another fav,... Green Tea Soy Lattes. I have to say, that the afternoon spent with my sister yesterday was one of the best times I've shared with anyone in quite some time, and it meant a great deal. We had such an incredible time. We laughed, we cried, we laughed some more,... a PERFECT afternoon.
While I was gone, Scott & the girls decided to make me a birthday cake. The girls really wanted to, and Scott, well, he just plain got roped into being a good sport. I'm sure his preference would have been running to the nearest bakery, LOL. They all had a great time. None of them having approached making a cake before, they took it out a tad early, and the center sunk. I can just imagine the initial looks on their faces, but leave it to my kids to improvise though, just as I would have,... so, they cleverly frosted it to look like Crater Lake with green icing around the perimeter and blue in the center, and then used Leggo trees for additional effect. Courtney then had the bright idea to title it "Crater Cake". And I have to say,.. I really think it was my favorite birthday cake ever!! :)
My evening was wonderful, too. Scott & I drove up to Hillsboro and dropped off the girls with his parents so we could go out to dinner at our favorite (mine & his) restaurant,.. Nona Emelia's in Aloha. It's a very quaint, authentic, italian restaurante' with all the italian charm & atmosphere you could desire, and excellent food, too. There, I tend to alternate between dishes,... most often it's been the Fettechini Alfredo for me, but last night it was the Linguini al Pesto,...... and more Chiannti,......... delightful!
Afterwards, we saw a movie, but turns out it's not one either of us would recommend to ANYone.... "Hot Fuzz", and no, it's not a dirty movie. It's a european copper flick, and was supposed to be hilarious, however, I suppose one of our first mistakes was forgetting how very much european humor differs from what americans deem as funny. This film was a disaster at best, and a complete waste of both time & money. If you haven't had the misfortune of seeing it yet, take my advise, and don't.
All in all though, an EXCELLENT day.
Today was laid back & relaxed, and very much enjoyable, and this evening, Scott & I watched the film, Dejavue, and let me just say that the concept for this movie, from start to finish, was sheer genius, and one that kept us both guessing throughout..... a PHENOMINAL film!!!

Violated at the Video Store??
WTH? I can't even go to the video store w/o getting caught up in someone else's "issues"........
So tonight, Scott's out of town (part of why we celebrated over the weekend). I took the girls to change out movies,... the three of them immediately hit the kids' section while I did my usual wander around the perimeter checking out the new releases. (Now, my rule with them, is they have to stay together, and the place is small enough anyway that I am able to pretty much keep them in my line of sight, otherwise I would never allow it.)
I barely started my round when this shorter fellow who seemed not altogether 'with it' asked me if I had seen the movie he was holding. I said, "no", and then he asked me if I would please read the back of the video to him. I said, "sure",.. no sooner did I take the video from his hands to begin to read it, and he leaned in from the side real close with his body up against me and laid his head on my shoulder. He seemed a bit childlike, and it was obvious he was a bit of a mentally challenged individual so I tried to ignore his behavior, read the video's cover, handed back the video, and attempted to proceed in looking for my own.
Well, then he wanted to shake my hand, and say thank you for being nice. I said "you're welcome", and tried to ignore him. he's says "you're nice". I said, "thank you, you're nice, too", and proceeded to walk away. He follows me. He asks me to read his video to him again, I did, and he presses close again, and lays his head on my shoulder. I'm getting uncomfortable with this, and attempt to walk away,.. AGAIN. He asks me some more questions, I answer, and try to walk away again. He follows me, and asks me to read his video AGAIN. I said I already did, he asks me about the video I've selected, and wants me to read it to him,.... then he gets really close again, and lays his head on my shoulder AGAIN (stop laughing, Vene!). I try to walk away, but you know I'm trying not to be obvious & rude to him..... well, he keeps trying to pull this, and I'm realizing (yeah, I know,.. can we say, S-L-O-W??) that this guy obviously has a fixation with women,... dude, touched me leg at one point, and I swear it sounded like he moaned in a whisper (ew!). I asked him if I could have my video back, he says he's not done, would I read it to him again,.... I say, "no, that's fine, you keep it", and I walked away,.... but kept walking this time. He follows me AGAIN, and wants to shake my hand & say thank you again, and keeps telling me I'm "nice". At that point, I was getting so friggin uncomfortable with the situation that I just said "thx", and then made a beeline back across the video store to get the kids, and go. I was not up for this crap, nor the drama of causing a scene over it.
Suddenly, I see the manager looking all around and on the phone (apparently she saw what was going on, but didn't say anything to me about it, thanks a lot, lady),... I took the girls and went next door to Starbuck's and then as we're getting into the car, the police show up, go inside the video store, then leave again. We head out, and about 3 blocks down the road, two squads are pulled over talking to the guy. I whipped around, and went back to talk to one of the officers to find out what was going on,.. did they know he wasn't shoplifting, that he was obviously mentally unstable, blah, blah, blah, and low and behold, this guy has a record, and they've been looking for him.
Apparently, he's been going from store to store and staring at women, then it progressed into him following women, and harrassing them, and now it's starting to progress further where he is actually touching them. They've talked & talked & talked to him about this behavior being inappropriate & that he needs to stop, and have even arrested him after he touched the gal at the hair salon. Apparently, his actions with me were his boldest yet, and so the officer basically asked me if I wanted to press charges because they want to try to nip this in the bud before it keeps getting worse, although obviously it is. Anyway, I told him that I would leave that to his disgretion after they talked to him some more, and if he felt that it was an appropriate decision and important to do so then I was fine with it, and he could press charges on my behalf. he was much more familiar with the situation. I asked him to just call me at home later to let me know if I had pressed charges or not, LOL.
Anyway,... I'm dragging this on too long,.. I'm tired, I guess. We got home from running a few more erronds, and sure enough, I had a message waiting for me. It was the officer letting me know that they did decide to press charges on my behalf and arrested the guy. Apparently, after talking to him some more, they realized that his (to use the officer's words) 'groin was wet',..... the officer seemed to think that this fellow enjoyed his fixation on me a little too much, if you get my drift (OMG, EWW!!!!!).
So,.. they arrested him. I guess they decided that his conduct violated me. I don't feel violated, but I have to say, I'm a bitcreeped grossed out & disturbed about it, and could use a drink...... Ooooooh my friggin' gaaaaaaaaaaaw,.......... sick-o!!!!! LOL

15 Years & Counting...
Just a short hour and a half from now, it will be official,... the 15 year milestone. It's the year of Crystal,... For me, this anniversary is much more than just a milemarker on the highway of married life. It's a renewal point. As many know, we've hit some pretty rough patches over the years, but have always persevered. We've always been stronger for it, however recently there have been certain issues in our relationship that had been at the root of many turbulent times, and had gone long over-looked, which led us to our separation in January. Technically, we are still separated, but this is temporary. Things are definitely headed in the right direction, and during this time we have worked hard at focusing our attention on keeping a strong friendship going, and rebuilding the companionship we had begun to lose the last few years. He has taken steps needed to work towards resolving the issues he needs to, and I am both impressed and appreciative of his efforts. He has pulled himself out of the dark place he had taken up residency in, and has been proving to me more & more that I matter, that we matter, and that he's willing to fight for us. To know that I am worth fighting for is huge. I still don't know where things will land, but as things sit right now, I have to wonder if I just might get my Happily Everafter, after all.........
So here's to marriage & miracles,.. to love, friendship, happiness & bliss,.. to another 15 years,........ Regardless of anything & everything,.. today, we are celebrating.
Below, is a memoir from our wedding that includes captions from our invitations. These are not the invitations themselves, but rather a piece of memorabilia...
The captions read:
"The most joyous of occasions is the union of a man and woman in celebration of life...
"Two lives, two hearts joined together in friendship, united forever in love...
"As our love unites us, may my family become your family, my friends, your friends..."

A Carriage Ride to Remember...
These are from our carriage ride through Seattle's Pioneer Square on Sunday... the buildings are beautiful, both old & new. It was the first time any of us have taken a carriage ride, and it was amazing!
A Day Down the Coast...
From last Monday's trip down the coast,... Lincoln City, Depoe Bay, and Yaquina Bay,... spent a good portion of the day at the lighthouse. Weather was perfect! Wish the pictures had turned out better,... still got my *fingers crossed* for the Rebel xti sometime this year though (thx, Anna)!!
Birds, birds, BIRDS!!
These are from last Monday,.. our trip down the coast. We stopped off to see the Canadian Geese at Basket Slough off Hwy 22. There literally thousands of geese, and at one point they all stirred up, and began to rise into the air starting from the farthest point in the distance and continued to grow like a wave coming towards us. The pictures do not remotely do the scene justice, and I've only included a couple of them. At one point I remember thinking,.. "Birds, birds, BIRDS!!",.. except these were geese. Does that make it more or less scary? LOL!
